LIVORE

The unease of restrained colour.

RESIDUO02

LIVORE began with my study of the chromatic and tonal relationships in Pasolini's final film, Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975), photographed by Tonino Delli Colli. My attention turned to the diffuse light that lays its interiors bare, and to colours that appear deliberate without becoming uniform. Even the warmer rooms seem to carry an unease beneath their carefully ordered surfaces.

The 2015 restoration by the Cineteca di Bologna and CSC – Cineteca Nazionale, completed at L'Immagine Ritrovata, served as the visual reference for this study. The restoration drew on the original negatives and period 35 mm prints, with camera operator Carlo Tafani contributing to the colour correction. This material provided a historically grounded basis for exploring four distinct visual conditions and translating their chromatic relationships into independent LUTs.

The collection begins at the water's edge. RIVA holds cream-yellow daylight against the green-grey lake, preserving the distance between dark foliage and the landscape beyond. VERDERAME moves into the villa's mineral interiors, where green enters stone and pale fabrics while skin, blue shadows and concentrated reds retain their own character.

In VINACCIA, the storytelling room finds a less frigid register. Terracotta walls and wine-dark surfaces maintain their separate depths, while lace and window light carry traces of yellow-green. RESIDUO draws the tonal and chromatic range closer together. Earth, masonry and skin approach one another, leaving small red accents and reflected light to persist within the subdued image.

Together, these four interpretations follow the film's changing visual structure rather than imposing a single palette. Their common ground lies in a restrained but persistent hostility, where colour can become unsettling precisely through what it withholds.
